Join us for the River Run!
On just a handful of days each year, the Veterans Memorial Bridge, which spans the Susquehanna River between Wrightsville and Columbia, closes to traffic for special events that allow residents and visitors to enjoy river views without vehicles whizzing by. Veteran and amateur runners alike are invited to take advantage of the chance to race across the bridge on Saturday, May 23, during the 17th annual 5K River Run hosted by the Susquehanna Valley Chamber of Commerce (SVCC). The race will be held rain or shine.
The 5K River Run will take off at 8:30 a.m. from the starting line outside of the Wrightsville Post Office, 307 Hellam St., Wrightsville. Walkers and participants with strollers are welcome to participate; however, pets and backpacks are not permitted in the race. River Run participants will venture across the bridge to Columbia before turning and crossing back over the bridge to Wrightsville. Restrooms and a water station will be available on the Columbia side.
A post-race awards ceremony in the Wrightsville Elementary School gymnasium will feature medals, cash awards, and door prizes. The top overall male and female finishers, as well as the overall male and female masters finishers age 50 and older, will receive a medal and cash prize. The top three male and female finishers in various age categories will also receive medals.
Proceeds from the event will support the SVCC, which is a nonprofit organization that serves Columbia, Marietta, Wrightsville, and the surrounding areas. Annual fundraising events such as the River Run help to keep the SVCC Visitors Center, located at 445 Linden St., Columbia, open to the public year-round.
